While the rest of film communities are suffering, with most actors and directors not getting projects and/or are releasing flops, South-Indian female actor, Urvashi has had a brilliant 2020, as far as her acting career is going. The 51 year old veteran actor has been part of three successful projects (relatively) so far and no actor can match that number, especially this year.
Born Kavitha Ranjini, Urvashi first started out as a child actor in the 1977 Malayalam film, ‘Vidarunna Mottukal’. Spanning over 40 years in the acting field, this briliant artist has acted in various movies of multiple languages including Malayalam, Tamil, Kannada, Telugu and Hindi. Urvashi has been called one of the most natural actors in modern cinema by multiple critics and watching her own screen has moved both critics and casual viewers to tears (according to multiple personal interviews).
Though not undiscovered, her acting prowess is on display for the rest of the country, in just these three films – ‘Putham Pudhu Kaalai’, ‘Soorarai Pottru’ and ‘Mookuthi Amman’, which are her latest films out of the 13 movies she appeared in this year. Although the first film is part of a five-part anthology, she is brilliant every time she comes on screen. In both ‘Soorarai Pottru’ and ‘Mookuthi Amman’, she portrays a mother, but the vast difference in character is easily noticed. She plays a dramatic role in one while a comedic role in another; both roles not taking anything away from each other, rather adding to the actor’s already filled-to-the-brim repertoire.
And it is not just us who have noticed this. Twitter has been going crazy since ‘Mookuthi Amman’ released on Disney+Hotstar on Diwali. Praises and memes of Urvashi have been the name of the game for the last couple of days on social media platforms and we can’t help but agree. The South-Indian actor deserves worldwide recognition (not just national) and her acting prowess in these three direct to OTT releases proves it. We hope she continues to have another illustrious 40 years in her already brilliant 40 year+ career. Check out some of those tweets down below:
‘Putham Pudhu Kaalai’ and ‘Soorarai Pottru’ are available for streaming on Amazon Prime Video, while ‘Mookuthi Amman’ can be watched on Disney+Hotstar.

Dear #Urvashi
2020 belongs to you. You were the best thing about #VaraneAvashyamundu. You depicted your vulnerable side beautifully in #PuthamPudhuKaalai .The breakdown scene in #SooraraiPottru moved me. Finally I laughed out loud in this Baasha scene in #MookuthiAmman ! pic.twitter.com/p7PnV0PwcS

Adhavadhu, to portray two polarisingly opposite characters (emotional mom + loosu amma) showing her 360° range like ABD is one. To pull off both equally convincingly is another.
Just a tweet to acknowledge the #GOAT actress of our times. #Urvashi #SooraraiPottru #MookuthiAmman pic.twitter.com/YrHT3z0jj8
