Every college, university or institute has their very own catchphrases, something so unique that only those who have been part of these will understand. Keeping this in mind, Netflix’s upcoming docu series “Alma Matters: Inside The IIT Dreams” talks about the lingos and phrases from the IITs too.
Though each IIT has its own sets of famous dialogues and catchphrases, some are still common to every IITian, irrespective of which one they went to. Netflix recently released a video where few talk about the different types of IITian present inside the institute. They not only mentioned but also defined what all these actually were.
The man highlighted in this video is the ace comedian Biswa Kalyan Rath, who himself was a student of IIT Kharagpur. He enlightens the viewers on the various kinds of IITians one would encounter, when the set foot inside an IIT.
The video talks starts with the talks of attending regular classes, which in itself is a very difficult task no matter where one is. While they talk about that, they mention the word “chaggi” which normally is given to a 6 pointer but for IITians it is an idealogy, a lifestyle in itself as they say.
Biswa explains that one will find two kinds of “Chaggis”, one that won’t study but is interested in doing something, something really random that makes them standout. While the other kind are just kids whose only job is too just lay around and not do anything at all no matter what.
He then goes on to explain “satti”, which is basically the average ones and the next one is “atthi”, which Biswa mentioned is someone he would respect. Next comes the “nehli”, which is someone that apparently Biswa Kalyan Rath completely dislikes.
These are the “IITian Lingo” which apparently is given to the ones who scores 6, 7, 8, 9 pointers in their evaluations. It might be related to points one receives in the exams, but this is something that stays attached to them as an identity, as one’s lifestyle like they mentioned. It might come as a surprise, but yes there are even pages and sites on internet completely dedicated to these IIT lingos and abbreviations.
These are few things that sets apart the IITs from rest of the institutes in India. One will discover even more when they get on to watch Netflix’s upcoming series “Alma Matters” which will start streaming on the platform on May 14th.
