In today’s digital age, everything right from the food we eat, things we buy or the TV shows we watch is easily accessible to us and something that a lot of us, especially in lockdown, have been spending our time on is watching movies and TV shows online.
OTT platforms such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney + Hotstar churn out season after season of various TV shows for their subscribers and despite being spoilt for choice, the subscribers end up consuming these shows in a single day or night.
Anticipated shows for example, Money Heist on Netflix, that have a huge fan base garner millions of views within a day of release. So what makes these shows so addictive?
TV shows that are made now offer bite sized episodes with an average of 40 minutes each wherein the episodes end on a cliff hanger leaving the viewer to guess the fate of their protagonist and making them click on the “Next Episode” tab.
The platforms are aware of the multiple choices that the viewers have so they ensure that once a viewer starts watching a show they are immersed in it completely from the first episode itself.
Giving the viewers an option to watch the whole thing at once or at their own pace is what makes them so tempting because the psyche of any viewer is such that if they can know the whole story immediately they wouldn’t want to wait a week to finish the TV show.
A major reason can also be, FOMO or the fear of missing out, people don’t want to miss out on popular or trending content and the only way they can watch everything is by investing their time in TV shows all at once so that they can quickly move on to the next obsession.
Another reason is the story of the shows itself, the plots are so well written, crisp and original that it doesn’t feel as if the story is dragging on with hundreds of episodes as is the case on traditional platforms.
With most shows having only 8-10 episodes per season it makes the show accessible and easy to binge.
So, what are you binge-watching next?
