Ever since Netflix announced the release dates for Stranger Things Season 4, their fans can’t contain their excitement. However, fans of another Netflix show, albeit a much smaller group than the Stranger Things fan group, are getting impatient. I am talking about The Umbrella Academy.
Followers of the show have been demanding Netflix, on social media, to announce a release date. It has already been announced that the third season of the show will be released in 2022. However, an exact date is yet to be announced. Also, as pointed out by a keen observer on Twitter, Netflix has removed the message ‘It’s official: Another Season is Coming’ from the shows page on its platform. This led to further unwarranted frenzy. The official twitter handle of the show posted teaser images of the third season of the show as recently as on 16th February 2022.
The Umbrella Academy is a superhero show based on the comic book series of the same name written by Gerard Way. Created for Netflix by Steve Blackman and developed by Jeremy Slater, it revolves around a dysfunctional family of adopted sibling superheroes who reunite to solve the mystery of their father’s death and the threat of an imminent apocalypse. The first season of the show premiered on Netflix in February 2019.
When can we expect season 3 to be released? There are really only two options – Before May 2022 or after Mid July 2022.
Stranger Things part 1 is set to be released on 27th May with part 2 on 01st July. If we presume that Netflix would not want to clash the release of any of its frontline shows, we can rule out a release date between Mid-May to July 2022. Which means, it could drop either before mid-May or after mid-July.
The gap between Season 2 wrapping up filming in November 2019 and releasing in July 2020 was around 8 months. With season 3 completed filming in September 2021, most audiences were expecting a release in May 2022. This means the show could drop in early May 22 with a release date announced in late-February/March.
For Season 2, Netflix had revealed teaser images in February 2019 with a release date announced on 28th May 2019, 2 months prior to the actual release. If the same timeline is followed, we may expect season 3 to arrive on our screens only after July with an announcement of the date in May 2022.
Also, in all of this, Netflix also needs to consider whether they want the show to be eligible for the Emmy awards this year or next. The cut-off date is May 31.
Given that most fans of the show would want the show to release sooner than later, they would be rooting for a release before May 2022. When do you think Netflix will release season 3 of The Umbrella Academy?
