Day before yesterday, we showed where to stream six of Nivin Pauly’s must watch movies. Today let’s look at five films of Nivin that went under the radar (around the globe/in India, not in Kerala) but are critically acclaimed for his performances. These films show his brilliant range as an actor and his ability to turn a basic script into award winning dialogue. Here are those films:
Hey Jude (2018)
This is an important film, in the sense that it shows the perception of some mental diseases in our society. Nivin Pauly portrays a man who has autism spectrum disorder, and recently gets laid of work due to his “immaturity”. Under any other actor, this could very well have been a disaster, but Nivin does an exceptional job in acting out such a complex character. This film is available on Amazon Prime Video.
Synosis: Jude, a mathematical genius with very bad social skills, visits Goa with his parents after the death of his aunt. There, his life changes completely after he meets Crystal, a moody musician.
Njandukalude Nattil Oridavela (2017)
Cancer is a disease that can be devastating when found in a person, and a society’s treatment of them changes when they see them with a life threatening disease. This hard-hitting topic is what Nivin tackles in his film. This feature film can be viewed online on Disney+Hotstar.
Synosis: Kurien returns home when his family summons him, expecting it to have something to do with his marriage. However, when he learns that his mother has breast cancer, he stays home to support her along with his family.
Thattathin Marayathu (2012)
This film couldn’t be left out of the list as it put Nivin Pauly on the map, and showcased his talent as an actor. The film was also extremely ahead of it’s time, in regards of its mentioning of a society-taboo topic – inter-caste marriage. Stream this film on Amazon Prime Video.
Synosis: Vinod is madly in love with a young Muslim woman, Aisha. Aisha, who gradually falls in love with Vinod, is disappointed by their difference in religion which is acting as a barrier in their marriage plans.
Neram (2013)
One of his few earlier roles where Nivin tries to breakout from his type cast role of a typical “boy-next-door”, follow him as he plays the role of an out-of-job slacker. This film is available on demand for both rent and sale on Youtube. Stream the film on Sun NXT App.
Synosis: An unemployed engineer struggles to pay back the money he took from a loan shark, which he needed for his sister’s wedding. His life becomes complicated when he marries his girlfriend because her father opposes their relationship.
Ohm Shanthi Oshaana (2014)
An atypical love-story, this film reinforced Nevin’s boy-next-door charms. The brilliant film was carried by him and his co-star Nazriya Nazim who were outstanding in their roles. Although he plays a supporting role to the lead Nazriya, Nivin still stood out as the love interest to the lead and played a special role in making the film a success. This feature can be streamed online on Disney+Hotstar.
Synosis: Pooja Mathew, a spirited young girl, dreams about marrying only for love. And therefore, she stops at nothing to impress Giri, who once saved her from a gang of unruly men.
Special Mention: Kayamkulam Kochunni (2018)
This film should have beat ‘Hey Jude’ in making this list, but unfortunately this film cannot be streamed on any of the major OTT platforms currently. Nevin is brilliant as Kochunni, who was a real-life Robin Hood back in the mid 1800s Kayamkulam, Central Travancore (present-day Kerala).
