Why Putham Pudhu Kaalai On Amazon Prime Will Be This Year’s Most Relatable Film?

Why Putham Pudhu Kaalai On Amazon Prime Will Be This Year’s Most Relatable Film?

Amazon’s newest Tamil Anthology film ‘Putham Pudhu Kaalai ’ has been widely anticipated by the South Indian audience. Split into five short films, the feature will tell us five stories which take place during the Coronavirus pandemic. Since we are in the Unlock 5.0 phase, the pandemic is still fresh on our minds, and this film will give us an insight about how people carried on with their lives during this world-wide epidemic. Here is why ‘Putham Puthu Kalai’ will be 2020’s most relatable feature film:

Covid-19:

A few years from now, if we were to look back at this year, we are likely to be reminded of a few monumental things like the Beirut explosion, George Floyd’s killing, Communal Riots in Delhi, the death of many celebrities among others. That is not even counting other big events like the California Wildfires, Australian bushfire (bet, many of you forgot about this already) and the Ukranian jetliner crash in Iran. But no event will be remembered as much as the Covid-19 pandemic – the virus that brought the entire world to its knees. Country wide lockdowns got issued by every government on the planet and its effect will likely be felt for another 5-10 years. Tackling storylines with this subject matter was going to happen eventually, and ‘Putham Pudhu Kaalai ’ is taking advantage by being one of the first films to do it.

Relatable Script:

For the above mentioned reasons, as well as the fact that we are still going through the final phases of the pandemic, this is going to be one of the most relatable scripts of the year. Set in the backdrop of the 21-day lockdown which was made mandatory by PM Modi, it will be interesting to see if the script writers decided to extend the story to talk about the subsequent Lockdown schemes – Lockdowns 2.0 and 3.0. Multiple stories means multiple situations and we will be given an idea about the different issues faced by different people.

Stellar Cast:

The film has two veteran actors in Jayaram and Urvashi, who will most likely play a couple in this feature. They have been in the film industry for over three decades and will bring subtle nuances to the characters they will portray, in this film. Suhasini Mani Ratnam and Shruti Haasan are also two big names involved in this cast-heavy (ironic) project. The rest of the cast members include Kalidas Jayaram, Kalyani Priyadarshan, M S Baaskar, Ritu Varma, Shruti Haasan, Suhasini Mani Ratnam, Anu Hasan, Kathadi Ramamurthy, Komalam Charuhasan, Andrea Jeremiah, Gurucharan C, Leela Samson, Simha, Sharath Ravi and K Muthukumar.

Directing Cast:

This film has five stories and so it was fitting that they brought on five celebrated Tamil directors for this Tamil Anthology. The directors are Sudha Kongara, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Suhasini Mani Ratnam, Rajiv Menon and Karthik Subbaraj. Each director has helmed noteworthy projects and they have multiple genre films under their belt.

PPutham Pudhu Kaalai’ is set to premier on Amazon Prime Video on October 16th 2020.
