Suspense thrillers are one of the most loved genres worldwide and especially in India. There have been a quality of movies and shows recently which have taken this genre onto a new high in India. For example Ratsasan, Psycho, Drishyam, Andhadhun, etc. But all these had the privilege to get showcased into the big silver screens aka theatres.
In 2020, more than half of the year’s slate was wiped out from theatres and landed onto the streaming platforms via direct to OTT release. Several movies tasted success and seeing the pandemic still at large, many filmmakers have decided to stick with the OTT release until a more clear view of the theatres is available.
While the big screens are available for the upcoming movies, the problem lies in the 50% capacity norm which halves the footfalls at the beginning only. And with the COVID-19 scare, people generally are cautious about going into the theatres. With all this happening, Mohanlal starrer Drishyam 2 made the news as it decided to skip a theatrical release and will be coming as an OTT release.
But since Drishyam 2 is supposed to be a suspense mystery is it a good idea to go for an OTT release? Here’s what we think!
An OTT release means that the viewer has the luxury of watching a content anytime according to his preference. And with that he/she might pause a movie in between for quite some time to complete his/her works or to attend some chores. Now what happens with suspense thrillers is that, these movies generally build a momentum and excitement as they move further into their narrative, and a break in between is more than likely to disrupt the momentum and all the excitement that it built upto that point.
Then there’ll not be the desired amount of shock or an impactful revelation which only hampers the image of the movie. With a theatrical release a person has to sit for 120 odd minutes with minimal disturbance which enables him to pay attention to the storyline seamlessly, grasping each and every little detail providing by the movie. This ultimately at the end gives an impact in his watching.
Suspense, Thrillers, Mystery all these genres are made for a hooked viewing and unlike comedies, romance should be consumed at one go. Jeethu Joseph, the director of Drishyam 2, expressed his thoughts on the same and acknowledged the fact that, an excitement of continuity is necessary for these films to have the desired impact.
So, in future if you’re watching a suspense or mystery movie in a streaming platform for the first time, try not to take long breaks if you completely want to enjoy the content.
