Why Thrillers Have Overpowered Every Other Genre

Why Thrillers Have Overpowered Every Other Genre

“Thriller”, the first thing that comes to our minds is all the shows that are on our streaming platforms. The ones that have blood dripping out of the body, dead body spilling, gunshots firing and all those words that normally would have been censored on the big screen, spewing out of the mouths left and right. We are absolutely not hating on these shows but can you believe how much gore we have consumed over the years with these shows and yet we love them. The horrors with these shows are far greater than movies and series from the horror genre.

So, do we hate on those shows? Definitely no. We cannot as these shows are the best things that have happened to us in terms of entertainment over the years and all the thanks goes to the OTT and the freedom to bring those in, but will these over the years be overdone to the top? Will there be a time when we would crave for something else in place of thriller? Well, there might not be such times because our minds are designed in such a way that no matter what we always love ourselves a good mystery and something engaging that keeps us on the edge of our seats. The thriller does that for us when we sit with our laptops or phones to binge watch these series or movies.

A recent poll that we did on our twitter page asking people on what genre they like the most for binge watching during the holiday times, the number of people choosing Thriller were the highest, followed by Comedy, Romantic and Horror. Thriller won by a big margin and there’s a definite reason to it. The amounts of thrillers that we have on all the streaming sites are way higher than any other genre. Also, everyone loves something that can keep us thoroughly engaged. We have long forgotten the meaning of comfort watch and if we do watch comfort series or movies, it’s mostly something that we have watched repeatedly over the years. There has been nothing that can keep us as engaged as these thrillers, that’s their power and the sad part is the other genres especially for Bollywood that are releasing are nowhere near being called “good” movies.

Bollywood did try to release some good movies but it hasn’t worked yet. They even tried mixing horror and comedy together but yet the combination failed even when it was helmed by one of the great actors like Akshay Kumar himself (Laxmii). Bollywood knows that thriller is doing well and hence they try to put it in those series that don’t need them. Looks like they do it to make them work, but they fail miserably and the ratings and reviews have been a testament to that. The recent release of the remake of one of the cult 90’s movies Coolie No. 1 was much anticipated but failed so badly, that it slipped in rankings and now is second among the lowest ranked Bollywood movies. It was in the comedy genre and yet it didn’t work. Reason being, it is already a tried and tested movie and remakes aren’t the most “in” thing at the moment, knowing that we have already seen the earlier movies and most of the times it’s always a previous hit that is being remade.

The want for thriller is at its all time high and the only explanation to this is that, there is a lack of originality in the other genres. Even though some thrillers might have the same story line, we always expect that it will turn different at some point of time and that is what keeps us engaged throughout but we can’t say the same for others.
