Durgamati – The Myth is the next big attraction coming on the OTT platform in less than three weeks. It is the remake of super hit Telugu movie, Bhaagamathie starring Anushka in the title role. The remake has Bhumi Pednekar essaying the same part.
Ever since the trailer has been out, there is a lot of comparison with the original. It is like a dejavu of what happened a couple of months ago. It was a different film back then, but the reactions were similar, almost, if not same.
What makes the comparison further interesting is that the original directors helm both the remakes (Laxmii and Durgamati). If it was Raghava Lawrence for Laxmii, then it is G Ashok for Durgamati. On a related note, Akshay Kumar is the common connection between both. He was the star of Laxmii and is one of the producers of Durgamati.
A remake with high quality seems to be okay even if the original gets distorted. But, a frame to frame recreation appears to be a no-no based on the comments. It then makes comparison like for like, which helps original stand out, mostly.
Bhumi Pednekar is no doubt talented, but she looks a little bit out of sorts when it comes to the big ‘mass’ appealing parts. She has done no such roles. Durgamati is the first in that regard and to be compared to Anushka brings her act down from the trailer alone. Even on the background front S Thaman had come with a sensational effort. It could be an issue, as well.
All said and done; one has to wait and see the final product before making a further judgement. Durgamati streams on Amazon Prime Video from December 11th.
