Jeethu Joseph is not an alien name to Indian movie enthusiasts. His Drishyam (2013) was a blockbuster in Malayalam and was subsequently remade in multiple Indian languages. Drishyam also was remade in Mandarin and this is a testament of the rage the film was. The director’s back to back success in thriller genre in 2013 is unforgettable. Quite expectedly, the setback faced by the director was larger as well. Following a streak of underwhelming films, the director came back to form in 2021 direct amazon prime video release Drishyam 2.
Drishyam 2 was a huge success on the streaming platform and is also getting remade in Hindi with Ajay Devgn. Jeethu Joseph’s latest release ‘Kooman‘ hit the theatres on November 4 and if reviews are to go by, the thriller master is here to stay. This Asif Ali starrer has been garnering appreciation from audiences to critics alike for its story and performances.
Kooman follows a successful police constable Giri who by character ruminates over negative life incidents and becomes a kleptomaniac as a result of it. The film is also doing really well at the box office asserting the fact that Jeethu Joseph is back and is here to stay.
Jeethu Joseph coming back to form in the capacity of a director makes us wonder how much is riding high on ‘Ram’. This upcoming Malayalam language action thriller is written and directed by Jeethu Joseph. Flaunting of a jam-packed star-cast including Mohanlal, Trisha, Indrajith Sukumaran, Samyuktha Menon, Adil Hussain, Anoop Menon, Saikumar and Siddique, Ram is announced to be a two part film.
Ideally looking at the comeback the Director has made with his last two outings, expectations are high on Ram. However here’s a twist. Ram was announced way before Drishyam 2 and Kooman went on floors. It was delayed due to covid-19 pandemic and was later divided into two parts post the KGF furore. This could mean two things :- either the main man Jeethu himself is more than confident in the story or the makers are just jumping in the sequel bandwagon.
To cut things short, there’s so much uncertainty looming over Ram at this moment. On one hand Jeethu Joseph is visibly gaining his lost ground and making the kind of films he was good at. On the other hand, Ram is an action thriller, a genre that can easily go wrong if not carefully done because scale is everything when it comes to action. Add to that Mohanlal’s script selection these days is pathetic to say the least. So one cannot simply trust the superstar to not give another mis-fire after his repeated bombs in the last few years. Let us wait and watch if Ram will carry the shadow of Kooman and Drishyam 2 in its content or if it will underwhelm like The Body, Thambi, Oozham and the likes.
