X-Men: The Animated Series (1992-1997) left a lasting impact on both the X-Men franchise and the animation world. The series was praised for brilliantly handling complex and mature storylines and paved the way for later superhero entries, such as Justice League and Batman: The Animated Series. Its sequel, X-Men ‘97, is scheduled to release on the Disney+ streaming service this year. And the show’s writer, Beau DeMayo, has revealed that the fan-favourite villain, Mister Sinister, will be the series’ primary antagonist.
Created by Chris Claremont, Mister Sinister fully appeared first in ‘The Uncanny X-Men #221’ comic book series. He was born Nathaniel Essex. When he was a human, Essex was a brilliant scientist who became obsessed with transforming humanity into a perfect race of superhumans. His obsession led him to encounter Apocalypse, one of the world’s first mutants. These two joined hands, and the mutant villain utilised Celestial technology to transform the British scientist into Mister Sinister.

In the original animated series, Mister Sinister wreaked havoc on the X-Men in a multi-episode storyline, The Twelve. He wanted to use the powers of Cable, Bishop, Jean Grey, and many more X-Men to turn himself into an immortal god-like deity. However, Jean Grey broke free from his control and helped the X-Men to defeat him.
In the X-Men ‘97, fans will see Magneto taking command of Charles Xavier’s mutants in the latter’s absence. This scenario gets more complicated after the inclusion of Mister Sinister. The supervillain will look to take advantage of this situation and end the X-Men once and for all. Will he be able to do that? Find out more when X-Men ‘97 premieres on the Disney+ service. Stay tuned for more updates.
