The Zee Group has pulled off a coup. It has bagged the total negative rights for Sai Dharam Tej’s new Telugu film, ‘Republic’. That means, it has bagged the rights to the movie across all mediums – theatrical release, satellite release and digital release. Last year, the Zee Group had bagged the negative rights to Sai Dharam Tej’s previous Telugu film, Solo Brathuke So Better. The company ensured the film’s theatrical release. The movie was the first notable film to release in theatres in the pandemic. The movie is now releasing online.
Zee has now laid hands on the new Telugu film starring the same hero. The corporate House has bagged the negative rights of Sai Dharam Tej – Deva Katta’s Republic (Working Title) for 34 Crore. This is a deal for the total negative rights of the film and Zee will be financing the project right from the production stage. This will work out to theatrical release, satellite, dubbing, and digital rights.
It has all rights to plan and release the film in such a way beneficial for it. Since normalcy is likely to return by the time the film is ready, it may have a theater release first, followed by the digital release immediately after it loses steam in the theaters.
Looks like Zee has adopted a hybrid model combining theatrical and digital releases. It has to be seen if this model will be scaled to other language films as well.
