Looop Lapeta Movie Review – Slowly Runs Out OF Excitement

What Is the Story About?

Satya (Tahir Raj Bhasin) is Savi’s (Taapsee) boyfriend. He works for a dreaded gangster Victor (Dibyendu Bhattacharya). One day Victor assigns an important work to Satya failing which there would be dire consequences. As expected, Satya fails. The onus falls on Savi to save him. Time is running out – did Savi save her boyfriend is the movie’s basic storyline.

Performances?

Taapsee is a bundle of energy, however, what we see in Looop Lapeta is a slightly restrained version. She only shows the burst of hyperactivity, but is mostly seen tense and running.

The role offers her a chance to show multiple emotions like romance with the lover and drama with the father. The latter track in fact feels extended only to showcase her dramatic skills. All in all, it’s a good outing for her as a performer and continues her glorious run.

Analysis

Aakash Bhatia directs Looop Lapeta. It is an official remake of the German film Run Lola Run.

Savi is an athlete who can’t run competitively ever again due to an unfortunate accident. She contemplates suicide and that’s when Satya enters her life. The whole thing is very routine, but neatly executed and establishes the bond between the lead pair well. It is why we can believe what happens next.

Satya is an unstable and nervous guy who can’t get things done as they should and it lands him in trouble. The characterisation’s of the lead is what drives the narrative of Looop Lapeta.

Of course, as the title suggests there is a time loop angle to the whole thing which makes the narrative exciting. However, it’s not as fresh a watch as it would have been a year ago.

The Hindu mythology connection to the time loop is an excellent idea conceptually, but it is not fully explored to give an impact.

If the time loop and crime angle interests, then there are a couple of other subplots which drags the narrative. The first one is related to Savi’s father which ties with her sporting profession, mother and lover. The second one is the love story of a cab driver. Both hold back the energy with their routine and predictable stuff.

The editing and making try its best to make an energetic and zany narrative. The frenetic cuts are utilised one too many times to give a racy feel. But, when it comes to drama the pace instantly slackens big time. The smooth flow is missing as a result.

The third subplot related to jewellery shop robbery saves the day, even though it comes a bit late in the flow. Still, the entertainment makes one glued to the proceedings. As it comes at the end of each loop, the end is always on a positive note.

Overall, Looop Lapeta is a time loop crime comedy thriller that has its moments. But, as a whole, it fails to maintain the excitement levels intact throughout. Give it a try if you like to watch some comedy.

Other Artists?

Tahir Raj Bhasin continues his versatile run. This is his third OTT outing after the recent Ranjish Hi Sahi and Yeh Kaali Kaali Ankhein. The roles offer him different emotions to portray and he does it effectively. Dibyendu Bhattacharya is good, as usual, but is wasted here. Among the rest of the cast, Rajendra Chawla is easily the best. His character along with Manik Papneja and Raghav Raj Kakker bring quirky fun to the narrative.

Sameer Kevin Roy and Shreya Dhanwanthary are alright. This whole track could have been crisply done. The actors despite being good lack the impact due to the boring drama.

Music and Other Departments?

Multiple composers are part of the movie providing the music and the background score. The latter by Rahul Pais and Nariman Khambata is excellent. They catch the mood of the film well and deliver. Yash Khanna’s visuals are good. The tone is neatly set through his work. Priyank Prem Kumar’s editing is a mixed bag. It feels overdone after a point. The writing is fine on the whole.
