Love-and-Affairs-Bengali-Web-Series-ReviewBOTTOM LINE: An Outdated Kitsch With Neat Acting By The Lead

Rating: 4.25/10

Platform: Hoichoi Genre: Drama, Romantce

Skin N Swear: Mild Skin Show Without Anything Overboard

What Is the Story About?

Roshini (Barkha Bisht Sengupta) and Abhijit (Indraneil Sengupta) are a happily married couple for around five years. The former is an actor, whereas the latter is a wellness worker. On the occasion of the birthday of Abhijit, Roshini presents some expensive gift which leads to heated exchange of words. It gets prolonged through various miscommunicated assumptions through the night and day. What happens next is what the series is all about?

Performances?

Indraneil Sengupta and Barkha Bisht Sengupta play the two characters on whom the entire series revolves. They play husband and wife who are going through a troubled phase in the marriage.

Indraneil and Barkha play the role of a struggling couple well. They deliver neat performances which have many layers within the short run time. They showcase various emotions like happiness, sadness, frustration etc. with great ease. The acts are instantly relatable, and they never get into any caricaturish tone.

Thanks to their sincere portrayal, we feel the intensity and gravity of the situation, at hand. The confrontation scenes and the final drama seem alright despite the problems due to them.

Analysis

Abhishek Saha directs Love and Affairs. It looks like an extended short film redesigned as a web series. It is not that of a problem compared to the content that is on offer.

Love And Affairs, for the most part, operates on an old story and presentation. While everything is enacted well, the core content is decades old. We have seen similar husband and wife quarrels from time memorial with the same reasons and reasoning. Most of it almost feels recycled stuff.

The typical ‘web’ related ‘elements’ are neatly inserted into the narrative, though. Apart from that, suspense is built initially only to fizzle out in the end due to its sheer predictability.

The better aspect of the series arrives at the end when a twist is revealed. More than the ‘twist’ it is the topic it addresses (related to mental health) that is probably the only fresh aspect of the whole. The actual thing presented is again, an old one.

The oddities of the narrative – the message at the end, the current track where things look so old fashioned and the flashback which gives a trendy vibe is also a problem with the series.

Overall, Love And Affairs offer nothing new – absolutely nothing. The lead pair try their best, but the content fails to elevate them.

Other Artists?

The series is all about the interactions of the lead pair. Apart from them, we see a few faces for small durations, but they have nothing worth mentioning.

Music and Other Departments?

The music is on predictable lines wherein we hear an escalation at the end of each episode suggesting a bang. If only there were something of that sort. The cinematography is below par, but the editing is alright. It sticks to the basic without trying any gimmicks. The dialogues also generate an outdated feel.
