What Is the Story About?
Adam Reed (Ryan Reynolds) from future (2050) accidentally lands in 2022 and meets his younger self. The two embark on an unexpected journey to close time travel forever.
Why did Adam Reed take such a decision? Did he succeed in his attempt is the movie’s basic plot.
Performances?
Ryan Reynolds is well Ryan Reynolds, i.e. he plays himself again and scores again.
Ryan Reynolds is an entertainer and that skill is put to great use again in The Adam Project. It is repetitive but as long as it works, there is nothing to complain about. It also helps that he manages to bring emotions into the mix as well making it a satisfactory outing. He does both effortlessly and that’s what stands out.
Analysis
Shawn Levy directs The Adam Project. It is a science fiction entertainer with a time travel angle.
Time Travels flicks are made so many that it has become a sub-genre in itself. One already expects certain points when a film is set in that backdrop. The makers of The Adam Project too know that and play around with the expectations via the writing. It adds to the fun.
The time travel angle is also used to create some excellent contrast and contradiction. The idea of young and slightly older Adam Reed interacting with each other is nice. It is future taken to the next level with relatable conversations. The bullying aspect is one of those, there are a few more. The one’s involving the parents (father and mother) works out really well. The bar interaction between older Adam and his mother is superb in that viewpoint.
The action is neatly punctuated in-between. They do look generic and lack the wow factor, but they serve the purpose. The fun camaraderie adds to the entertainment.
The script is a strong pursuit of The Adam Project. It might appear convoluted to those who are not cued in on the genre, though.
The beginning of the third act with the father track is well thought out. It lends to the smooth transfer of emotions. It is critical to ending. However, the actual climax with the action and VFX feels a little clunky.
Overall, The Adam Project is an entertaining ride despite a convoluted sci-fi premise. The actors do the job and make one glued to the proceedings. If you like to watch something fast-paced and entertaining give The Adam Project a try.
Other Artists?
There are very few actors in The Adam Project, but each one manages to leave an impression no matter how small the role.
Walker Scobell is impressive as the young Adam Reed. It is his chemistry with Ryan Reynolds that’s the mainstay of the whole narrative. Jennifer Garner and Mark Ruffalo further add to the fun and chemistry. The entire family is well cast and deliver the required.
Among the rest, Zoe Saldana and Catherine Keener have prominent parts. They do their roles adequately. The rest of the cast is alright.
Music and Other Departments?
Rob Simonsen’s music and background score are nice. The racy and peppy feel is maintained due to the work. Tobias Schliessler’s cinematography is neat, albeit a bit generic. Dean Zimmerman and Jonathan Corn do the editing. It is fine, on the whole. The action choreography could have been better. The writing is good and it helps provide the fun and drama in equal measures.
