Since 1983, Hawkins, Indiana, has been a graveyard for the misunderstood and the innocent. We’ve mourned Barb, Bob the Brain, and Eddie Munson. But as we approach the final two-part conclusion of Stranger Things 5, a single name hangs in the balance, sparking more anxiety than Vecna himself: Steve Harrington.
Ever since the final season of Stranger Things was greenlighted by Netflix, the show’s fanbase has shown great concern and care for Steve’s future, paving the way for the popular “Protect Steve” movement. But if recent hints from the Duffer Brothers are any indication, the man who went from King Steve to the world’s best babysitter might be preparing for a final curtain call that will leave the world in tears.
Amidst the non-stop flying rumours of Steve’s demise at the end of the show, The Duffer Brothers sent a new and gigantic wave of panic among the fanbase during their recent appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
Tasked with teasing the series finale using Funko Pops, Matt and Ross Duffer didn’t hold back. While they placed Eleven in water and Will atop Henry Creel’s head, it was their treatment of Steve that sent shockwaves through the audience.
Matt Duffer placed Steve’s figure precariously on the edge of the desk. As the audience gasped, Ross Duffer took it a step further, nudging the figure until it plummeted to the floor. “There it is!” Fallon exclaimed. “That’s how Stranger Things ends!”
Do you guys know that Steve was originally scripted to die in Season 1? He only survived because the creators fell in love with Joe Keery’s performance. Having cheated death for four seasons, Steve may finally be out of luck.
The stakes have never been higher than in the recently released Vol. 2 trailer. The bond between Steve and Dustin Henderson has been the emotional glue of the series, and the trailer leans heavily into that connection. In a moment that feels like a final goodbye, the two swear a pact: “You die, I die.”
Online rumours and leaked theories suggest that Steve’s arc, one of the greatest redemption stories in television history, can only be completed through a grand, selfless act. Steve has spent the last few years looking for a purpose beyond his hair and his high school reputation. He found it in protecting “his” kids.
Fans have been speculating for a long time that Steve might sacrifice himself to save Dustin or Nancy, finally proving that he is the hero he never thought he could be. It would be a poetic, albeit devastating, conclusion. The boy who started as a selfish jock ended as the man who gave everything for the people he loves.
If Steve falls, it won’t just be a character death. It will be the loss of the show’s moral compass. From fighting Demogorgons with a nail-studded bat to being the only adult figure who actually listens to the kids, Steve is the soul of Hawkins.
With Vol. 2 dropping on Christmas Day (December 26 in India) and the series finale arriving on New Year’s Eve, the clock is ticking for Steve Harrington. Will he beat the odds one last time? Or will the Duffer Brothers follow through on the dark fate they teased on Fallon’s desk?
Prepare your tissues, Hawkins. The end is coming, and we might have to say goodbye to our favourite babysitter forever. Protect Steve at all costs. Stay tuned for more updates.
