Kerala Piravi AKA Kerala Day is the birthday of the state of Kerala (coincidentally also the birthday of another South Indian state, Karnataka). Back in 1956, when India was still facing problems post-Independence, the States Reorganisation Act help give birth to Kerala on November 1st, 1956. This day is usually a holiday within Kerala and many celebrate Kerala Piravi by going to small community festivals which are normally organised with the help of religious and political committees, usually involving temples churches, mosques or other religious places. Since Kerala is still feeling the effects of the second wave of the pandemic, many would be forced to stay at home during this time. So, for today, here are 4 movies to check out during Kerala Piravi:
Unda
Any Malayalam festival at home should feature films with the two Malayalam icons – Mohanlal and Mammootty. This film features the latter and he is quite brilliant as always. Unda follows a group of freshly trained policemen who are sent to a Maoist-prone area, for election duty. They are forced to defend themselves from an attack without sufficient ammunition. This movie can be streamed on Amazon Prime Video.
Thinkalazhcha Nishchayam
Engagements have become one of the most common functions in Kerala, due to the amount of “backed up” betrothals during 2020 and early 2021. So the film, whose title roughly translates to “Engagement on Monday” is quite perfect. Follow a family as they try to set up the perfect engagement for their middle child as their extended relatives join them for the event. As more people join, more and more family secrets get exposed. This movie can be watched on SonyLIV.
Devaasuram
Similar to Unda, this movie too features a Malayalam Icon. However, instead of Mammootty, this film features Mohanlal. A rich socialite, Neelakanthan squanders away his inheritance. However, his life turns upside down when his mother reveals a terrible secret. The oldest film on this list can be viewed on YuppFlix and ErosNow.
Bangalore Days
Why talk about a film set in another state during Kerala Pirava? The film does talk about a few good points about the state of Kerala and its people. Also, Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka, is another state that is currently going through its birthday. And a celebration shared is a celebration doubled (or something along those lines). The movie follows three cousins who shift to Bangalore as they settle into adulthood. This movie is streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.
