India produces a huge amount of movies every year. while some end up becoming blockbusters, some don’t see much popularity. While some become big hits, despite a lack in story, some don’t despite a great story, and there are so many such movies still there, waiting to be watched by people. Even though some of these movies didn’t receive enough success in theatres, it has received more than enough love from critics, viewers and lots of international film festivals.
Here’s a list, especially for you of underrated Hindi films streaming on Netflix, that deserves more love and views. All of these besides, great stories and accolades have one more thing in common- a strong female lead.

Sir, is a beautiful movie telling about some of the most serious social issues in our society. The movie is directed by Rohena Gera and was produced by Rohena Gera and Brice Poisson. The movie stars Tilotomma Shome and Vivek Gomber in the lead. The movie tells the story of a prosperous young Indian man who falls in love with his servant Ratna, a widow but with the dream of becoming a fashion designer. The movie shows how they are both different and hold a different place in society, but the heart will never understand how society works and hence, Ashwin never ceases to love her. Here on the other hand, even though Ratna understands his love, draws a line and tells how this will never be acceptable in society. The movie focuses on how there are so many different stories amongst people, and without the class issue, everyone will almost be the same.

Soni, a crime drama film, is directed by Ivan Ayr. It is produced by Kimsi Singh and Kartikeya Narayan Singh. The movie stars Geetika Vidya Ohlyan and Saloni Batra in the leads. The movie tells the story of a young policewoman named Soni, in Delhi and her superintendent, Kalpana. They have collectively taken action on the growing crisis of violent crimes against women. However, their alliance suffers a major setback when Soni is transferred due to misconduct. Soni has always suffered temperamental issues and that has led her to act aggressively in certain cases when it was much needed, but since the people she was up against always were higher in power, Soni was the one to face consequences even though she was right.

The movie is a dark retelling of the classic fairy tale “Red Riding Hood”. The movie is directed by Devashish Makhija. The film stars Sushama Deshpande, Sharvani Suryavanshi, Abhishek Banerjee, in the lead. The movie ever since its release has received various accolades and has been part of various film festivals. The movie tells the story of a family, when the family’s little girl is found raped and dumped in a trash heap near her slum. Her parents are more concerned with survival than the dignity of the girl, like society demands at this point. The cops are helpless at this point because they found out that the rapist is a local politician’s son and it will be hard to take action against him. This is when grandmother, her Ajji comes in as she is determined to get her revenge for her little girl and sets out on her journey of getting the culprit punished.

Set in a remote village in Rajasthan, India, the film follows Prerna played by Rachel Saanchita Gupta, a local teen living a life bound by traditions. Her life changes when Jessica, from London, arrives in the village for work. Prerna and her friends are introduced to an exciting new thing, all thanks to Jessica and her old friend, who cruises their way on a skateboard. The kids become interested in the sports and start disrupting everything on their way as they get more into the game. Seeing all these, Jessica is determined to empower and encourage their newfound passion and starts building a skate park for them. This puts Prerna with a difficult choice between conforming to society’s expectations of her or getting towards her dream of competing in the National Skateboarding Championships.

The movie is a romantic drama directed by Kanwal Sethi. It stars Shefali Shah and Neeraj Kabi in the lead, the story is about two middle-aged people living their lives in Mumbai. Amar, is an aging film star, a famous and wealthy man, he lives alone in Mumbai, the city of dreams. Tara, on the other hand, is a widow, runs a small restaurant with the help of her son, who delivers Amar’s meals. Tara has never seen Amar in real life. Something that began by pure chance a year ago has now turned into a ritual. They both, for hours on end, talk to each other on the phone. Until one day, when Amar decides to finally meet Tara face-to-face.

The debut film of Ishaan Khattar, Beyond The Clouds, is directed and written by Majid Majidi. The movie besides Ishaan stars Malavika Mohanan. The story follows a hedonistic teenager Amir, who is constantly dodging trouble while dealing drugs in the gullies of Mumbai. Following a drug bust, he somehow zooms past through the cops. Nowhere to go, he finds his estranged sister Tara’s place to escape. Complications from concealing Amir lands Tara in jail, but she still feels that her brother is her only hope of living in the outside world again. While their lives are now dark with despair, they still have belief, hope may shine from beyond the clouds.
