Amazon Prime Video is facing criticism again, and this time it’s for spamming customers with misleading promotional messages. During the recent Prime Day sales from July 12 to 14, many users received an exciting message that said they could get an annual Prime membership for just ₹999. Naturally, that caught everyone’s attention. Who wouldn’t want Prime at a discounted price? But when people tried to grab the offer, the checkout price showed ₹1499 instead.
When confused customers reached out to Amazon’s help desk, the reply was simple: only eligible customers can get the ₹999 offer. But here’s the problem. The promotional message never mentioned any such condition. But users still personally received this obviously spam message. To make things worse, even a week after Prime Day ended, users are still receiving this same message. People have now taken to X (formerly Twitter) to call this out, accusing Amazon of spreading misinformation and spamming their inboxes with offers that don’t exist for them.
Amazon’s help team is replying to some of these posts on X, but that doesn’t fix the bigger issue. This is Amazon we are talking about, one of the biggest companies in the world. Such careless promotions are not expected from them. Millions use Amazon for shopping, fast deliveries, exclusive deals, and Prime Video content. Of course, a message about a special offer would create excitement. But when people realise that the offer is either expired or not available to them at all, it leaves a bad taste.
Sending personal messages for a discount that can’t be availed by everyone is not just misleading, it’s downright spammy. Amazon’s lack of responsibility to its consumer base is a shameful display.
