Academy Award nominated, young British actor Florence Pugh is expected to appear in her first Marvel film, the upcoming feature ‘Black Widow’. The 24th movie of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (MCU) was expected to come out earlier this year on May 2020. It got rescheduled twice due to the ongoing pandemic before settling on a final premiere date of April 29th, 2021. There has been rumors circulating recently that the ‘Little Women’ actor is going to appear in two Disney+, MCU web series.
Florence Pugh is set to portray Yelena Belova in the MCU feature ‘Black Widow’, who was the second ‘Black Widow’ in the comics after Natasha Romanoff. In the film, Yelena is expected to be a sister-figure to Scarlet Johansson’s Natasha. They both grew up together in the Red Room, where they trained with one another. The film will be set following the events of ‘Captain America: Civil War’.
The two Disney+ web series in question are ‘Hawkeye’ and ‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’. The first series ‘Hawkeye’, makes sense. Clint Barton AKA Hawkeye (portrayed by Jeremy Renner) was Natasha’s closest friend and with Yelena being as close to Natasha as she was, both characters crossing paths seems likely. With Natasha Romanoff dying in the last ‘Avengers’ movie, it is expected that Yelena will take up the mantle of ‘Black Widow’ now. Rumors are already circulating that Pugh will be donning similar “Ronin” attire which Renner wore during ‘Avengers: Endgame’. Well Pugh is mostly confirmed to appear in the ‘Hawkeye’ series, which will probably only start shooting next year.
Because ‘Black Widow’ was expected to be released by this point, Pugh coming on the Marvel series ‘The Falcon and The Winter Soldier’ wouldn’t have been much of a surprise. ‘Black Widow’ was supposed to be the project which kick started Phase 4 in the MCU but it looks like that honor will go to ‘WandaVision’. So because of all of this “corona-panic”, we are not sure if Pugh will be able to make an appearance, but the higher up in Marvel Studios are trying to make it happen. We will just have to wait and see.
