Diehard OTT enthusiasts might already be aware that OTT giant Netflix had launched a website that houses weekly top ten lists based on the metrics of the total number of hours viewed for a particular title. The portal provides viewership data under four categories namely ‘Films (English)’, ‘Films (Non-English)’, ‘TV (English)’, and ‘TV (Non-English)’.
As per the latest weekly viewership data revealed by Netflix, the ongoing supernatural series ‘Stranger Things’ Season-4 has once again topped the list in the English language TV shows category. The Netflix show boasts of an impressive 102.26 million hours in its third week of running. While it had registered a massive 335 million hours and 159.2 million hours during the first and second weeks, respectively.
The global popularity of ‘Stranger Things’ can be ascertained by the fact that the fourth season was viewed for a whopping 883.3 million hours in the first 28 days on Netflix. It’s the undisputed champ in the English TV shows category on Netflix.
Now, if we compare ‘Stranger Things Season-4’ with the cult South Korean superhit series ‘Squid Game S1’, the latter was viewed for a virtually unbreakable 1.65 billion hours, in the first 28 days on Netflix. So, the golden question is: Can ‘Stranger Things S4’ break Squid Game’s massive viewing record on Netflix? Let’s find out.
‘Stranger Things’ Season-4 was released on Netflix in two volumes. The first volume comprising seven episodes dropped on the OTT platform on 27th May. While the second part is set to stream from 1st July onwards. But the catch is that Vol.2 has just two episodes!
This means that, in order to surpass ‘Squid Game’, ‘Stranger Things S4’ has to cover around 767 million hours in the first 28 days of its release. But with just two episodes, despite the reported runtimes of 1 hours 20 mins for the eighth episode and 2 hours 20 minutes for the ninth and final episode, the thought of ‘Stranger Things S4’ breaking Squid Game’s massive viewing record of 1.65 billion hours on Netflix seems far-fetched and unlikely.
Having said that, ‘Stranger Things Season-4’ will still most likely remain the second most viewed series on Netflix (any language) for a long time as it’s already ahead of another popular foreign show ‘Money Heist: Part 5’, which is at 792 million viewing hours. Which upcoming show on Netflix do you think can break Squid Game’s record on Netflix? Squid Game Season-2 itself?
