‘Marakkar: Lion of The Arabian Sea’ will release in theatres on December 2nd 2021. The standoff between the Malayalam film producer Antony Perumbavoor and the theatre associations ended last week and with the help of the Minister of Culture, Saji Cherian, the Mohanlal starrer is finally heading towards the cinema halls. With this, all of the other Antony Perumbavoor produced, Mohanlal starrers will be making its way to theatres as well, which includes ‘Bro Daddy‘. With the way things are now progressing, ‘Drishyam 2’ will be the only Mohanlal film to release directly for streaming in 2021 – and likely 2022 and 2023 as well.
Just weeks ago, many were reporting that the Malayalam megastar, Mohanlal could beat other Malayalam actors such as Prithviraj and Fahadh Faasil as the actor to lead in five Malayalam direct-to-OTT released films. There was also a chance that these films could release back-to-back on streaming platforms as well. But all of those possible records gone – at the snap of a finger.
Still, many are not disappointed by the fact that ‘Marakkar: Lion of The Arabian Sea‘ will release in theatres. In fact, even Perumbavoor wanted to release the film in theatres, even after he decided to opt for an OTT premiere on Amazon Prime Video. But the fact that we will not see ‘Bro Daddy’ or possibly even ‘12th Man‘ on an OTT platform means that there is a good chance that we will not see a direct-to-OTT featuring Mohanlal film anytime in the near future. Sure, we hope filmmakers will approach this actor in time and hopefully agree to an OTT project, but with how Kerala theatres are currently fairing, it is highly likely that the Malayalam megastar will only opt for theatrical releases for now.
