Netflix. Amazon Prime Video. ZEE5. SonyLIV. And many more. Malayalam films gained national attention due to two major unlikely forces – the coronavirus pandemic and direct-to-OTT releases. All of the aforementioned OTT platforms have released Malayalam films directly for streaming and they have all reaped the benefits of releasing popular films on their virtual platforms. Malayalam movies have started to increase in pan-Indian popularity as a result, with many big streaming platforms still waiting on the sidelines, hoping to release their own Malayalam content. A few days ago, Disney+ Hotstar joined these OTT platforms by buying up the streaming rights for Nivin Pauly’s upcoming film, ‘Kanakam Kaamini Kalaham’.
The announcement for this upcoming direct-to-OTT release came on the official Instagram account of ‘Kanakam Kaamini Kalaham’s’ lead, Nivin Pauly himself. When this movie releases on Disney+ Hotstar, it will also be Nivin Pauly’s first direct-to-OTT released feature film. Many expected his highly anticipated film, ‘Thuramukham’, to reach the small screen first, but the film producers are planning to hold on to the film for a theatrical release.
‘Kanakam Kaamini Kalaham’ is a great way for Disney+ Hotstar to open their “Malayalam direct-to-OTT premiere account”. The film features a superstar in Nivin Pauly, a great writer & director in Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval and a brilliant support cast in Grace Antony, Vincy Aloshious, Vinay Forrt & Jaffer Idukki. While the release date of this upcoming film hasn’t been announced, it is expected to drop very soon, most likely in the form of a trailer with a Disney+ Hotstar VIP watermark in the background. For now, we will just have to wait and see.
