On the heels of the successful run of Marvel shows such as ‘WandaVision’, ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’, ‘Loki’ and the currently streaming animated series ‘What…If?’ on the Disney+ and Disney+ Hotstar OTT platforms, Marvel is now reportedly (via The Wrap) adapting its ‘Werewolf by Night’ comic for the streaming giant. The recent report seems to corroborate the earlier rumors about Marvel’s plans for ‘Werewolf by Night’.
Moreover, Marvel Studios is ostensibly on the quest of a male Latino actor to essay the titular role in the yet-untitled comic book adaptation which will reportedly stream as a Disney+ Halloween special. The production for the said adaptation might begin in the first quarter of 2022.
Incidentally, ‘Werewolf by Night’ has appeared in Marvel comics as two different characters namely Jack Russel and Jake Gomez. Jack Russel first appeared in the early 1970s as a Lycanthrope, who turns into a werewolf because of a curse. He has the ability to transform into a werewolf even without a full moon while also retaining his intellect, rather similar to the titular character in the upcoming Marvel series ‘She-Hulk’ starring Tatiana Maslany, Mark Ruffalo, and Tim Roth.
While the second character Jake Gomez was portrayed in the comics as a Native American male of Hopi descent also cursed with familial lycanthropy. However, it’s still unclear whether Marvel plans to adapt Jack Russel or Jake Gomez for the alleged ‘Werewolf by Night’ Halloween special adaption.
In case the ‘Werewolf by Night’ adaptation moves forward as reported, this would make it the second holiday special after James Gunn’s directorial ‘The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special’ starring Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper (voice) & Vin Diesel (voice), and which is currently slated for 2022 release on the Disney+ streaming platform.
