Netflix is upping its anime game and has ordered a new Terminator web series – a new animated web series which will be based off the legendary Arnold Schwarzenegger movie series – The Terminator. The OTT giants have already been creating a lot of new original work such as Blood of Zeus and Castlevania, but the streaming behemoth is looking for a way into garnering the attention of the huge anime fan base – and catching a big name like Terminator should work in its favour.
Terminator is one of the most iconic original sci-fi stories ever written and one of the few stories that can actually resonate with us in this day and age, according to Netflix’s Vice President of Japan and anime, John Derderian. “The new animated series is said to explore this much untapped wealth of a universe in a way it has never been before, Derderian continues to claim. The VP is excited to show fans this new chapter in the Terminator Universe, another epic clash between man and machine.
All though the project is at its earliest stages, plot details are still under tight wrap. Sundance produced the last two Terminator movies and will join hands with Netflix in creating the new time travelling animated web series. The Terminator franchise is over 30 years old, has had 6 relatively successful movies and has made over 2 million dollars for the producers. These types of franchises, which are over a couple of decades old, can easily garner loads of fans of all ages. This new project is only going to garner more interest as it proceeds with its plans in the future.
With this, Terminator joins esteemed names like Splinter Cell, Pinocchio, Rise of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Rise of The TMNT), Cyberpunk: Edgerunners among many others to be adapted into an animated series (In the case of Rise of The TMNT, the animated series is a reboot). Of course the series has only just been ordered and The Batman co-writer Mattson Tomlin has been brought on board on the animated series as showrunner and executive producer, so we need to wait until more details about the series drop. For now, we will just have to wait and see.
