Global streaming giant Netflix has ordered a new supernatural horror series ‘Archive 81’. The eight part drama series is loosely inspired from the namesake podcast created by Marc Sollinger and Daniel Powell who serve as co-producers for Archive 81.
Netflix’s official logline for ‘Archive 81’ reads, “When archivist Dan Turner (Athie) takes a mysterious job restoring a collection of damaged videotapes from 1994, he finds himself reconstructing the work of documentary filmmaker Melody Pendras (Shihabi) and her investigation into a dangerous cult. As Dan is drawn into Melody’s story, he becomes convinced he can save her from the terrifying end she met 25 years ago.”
Emmy Award nominee Mamoudou Athie (Jurassic World: Dominion; Uncorked; Oh Jerome, No) as Dan Turner and Dina Shihabi (Ya Bint, Altered Carbon, Ramy, Jack Ryan) as Melody Pendras, form the lead cast for the series. The rest of the cast remains to be announced by Netflix.
Rebecca Sonnenshine (The Vampire Diaries, The Boys) is the showrunner, writer and executive producer for Archive 81. Half of the season, including the first episode will be directed by Rebecca Thomas (Stranger Things, Limetown). The original script for the Netflix show has been developed by Paul Harris Boardman (The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Deliver Us From Evil). Both Thomas and Boardman also serve as executive producer for the Netflix show.
James Wan through his Atomic Monster (MacGyver; The Conjuring Universe film franchise; and the upcoming Malignant and There’s Someone Inside Your House) and Michael Clear serve as executive producers with Rob Hackett as co-executive producer.
Talking about Archive 81 on Netflix, Rebecca Sonnenshine said, “With Archive 81, we’re hoping to give the supernatural horror genre a new twist — while keeping a dark, deeply emotional romance as its core. Alongside the talented Mamoudou Athie and Dina Shihabi, and visionary partners Atomic Monster and Rebecca Thomas, I’m excited to take Netflix viewers on a terrifying and visually thrilling adventure.”
