The last two years have been a bonanza for OTT viewers. A mind-boggling number of films released directly on OTT. Yet others released in theatres for a short time and arrived on OTT for the viewing pleasure of audiences. However, several popular, much-talked-about films are still to make their way to the right destination – either in theatres or on OTT.
A few keenly awaited films have been stuck in the cans, waiting for a decent release. Several released films received critical and audience appreciation in the theatres. But it’s been months since their theatrical release and they’ve still not arrived on OTT.
In both cases, audiences have reached the end of their patience. The clamour for the films has reached a crescendo on social media. Fans are demanding their now – sooner rather than later. Their demands have fallen on deaf ears until now. Let’s see what the future holds for these much-demanded films.
Here are the most demanded films by fans who’ve been rooting for them like forever –
1. Raangi
The Trisha starrer Raangi has been in the making for quite some time. It has also been ready for release since long. There was buzz that the film, directed by M. Saravanan and written by AR Murugadoss, would release on a popular OTT platform. But looks like it’s not happening anytime soon!
2. Naragasooran
Tamil film Naragasooran is one of the most-demanded films of recent times. Film buffs have inundated social media with demands to release the film. Naragasooran is a supernatural thriller film, the second in Karthick Naren‘s “thriller trilogy”, the first one being Dhuruvangal Pathinaaru. The Naragasooran cast includes Arvind Swami, Shriya Saran, Sundeep Kishan, Aathmika and Indrajith Sukumaran. Its release has been vacillating between theatres and directly on OTT, but as of today, there’s no release in sight. With Maaran’s OTT debacle, looks like Naragasooran will be stuck without release for a while longer.
3. Rocky
A Tamil gangster drama, Rocky received critical acclaim and audience appreciation when it released in theatres last year. The hard-hitting story and stylish execution was the talk of the town upon release. Which is why it’s quite surprising that Rocky hasn’t arrived on any OTT platform even months since its theatrical release. Rocky is written and directed by Arun Matheswaran, and features Vasanth Ravi and Raveena Ravi as leads, along with Bharathiraja and Rohini in crucial roles.
4. Pelli SandaD
Telugu film ‘Pelli SandaD’ was a surprise hit when it released in theatres in October 2021. M. M. Keeravani’s melodious music, as well as the refreshing pair of young actors Roshan and Sree Leela contributed to viewers appreciating the youthful entertainer in theatres. But even 7 months after release, there’s no sign of the film releasing on OTT. Meanwhile, demands and queries about Pelli SandaD OTT release date keep rising by the day.
Telugu film Virata Parvam boasts the exciting pairing of Sai Pallavi and Rana Daggubati. Both actors are much loved and adored by their fans. Sai Pallavi is also fresh off the success of ‘Shyam Singha Roy’. Virata Parvam’s intriguing plot is set in the backdrop of the naxalite movement. Priyamani, Nandita Das, Naveen Chandra, Zarina Wahab, Easwari Rao, and Sai Chand form the rest of the cast. With so much going for it, Virata Parvam is a highly anticipated film of recent times. But it has neither announced a theatrical release nor a direct OTT release yet. Film buffs are wondering what’s with the film and its makers. As of now, no release is on the horizon for Virata Parvam.
6. Chakra
Vishal‘s Tamil film Chakra was received a decent response when it released in theatres a year ago in February 2021. The film is a thriller set in the backdrop of cyber-crime and hacking. However, Chakra has not released on OTT even so long after its theatrical release. Maybe the reason is the legal tussles between Trident Arts and Vishal’s production company. Let’s hope Chakra releases on OTT soon, else it will go unwatched by a vast section of film enthusiasts.
Dhruva Natchathiram is written and directed by auteur Gautham Menon, which is reason enough to make it one of the most anticipated films of recent times. It is said to be a spy thriller shot in seven countries, with an ensemble cast of Vikram, Ritu Varma, Aishwarya Rajesh, Radhika Sarathkumar, Simran Bagga, R. Parthiepan and Sathish Krishnan. In development since early 2017, Dhruva Natchathiram is a film everyone is waiting breathlessly for. If only it gets a release!
8. Queen Remakes: (4 films in all)
The South Indian remakes of Kangana Ranaut’s hit film ‘Queen’ have been ready and waiting for release since almost three years now. There was some talk at the start of the lockdown that the four films have been picked up by Prime Video for direct to OTT release. But that didn’t happen. As of today, there’s no announcement of a theatrical or OTT release. Stuck in the cans is Tamannaah Bhatia’s Telugu film, That Is Mahalakshmi; the Tamil version titled Paris Paris, starring Kajal Aggarwal; the Kannada version called Butterfly, starring Parul Yadav; lastly, the Malayalam version, named Zam Zam, starring Manjima Mohan.
