The most hotly anticipated film, S S Rajamouli‘s ‘RRR‘ has finally announced its release date. The action extravaganza will hit theatres on 7th January 2022, just the week before Sankranthi. Interestingly, the film will clash at the box office with another much-awaited film, Sanjay Leela Bhansali‘s ‘Gangubai Kathiawadi‘. It is being touted as the clash of the titans, as both directors are top of the charts in their respective film industries.
While the box office clash between two buzzing films is a shocker in itself, even weirder are several important things related to both movies. For one, Gangubai Kathiawadi and RRR share distributors in Jayantilal Gada’s PEN Studios. PEN has the distribution rights for the Hindi version of RRR in North India. That is in itself an intensely conflicting situation for both movies.
Secondly, both movies share its leading lady. Alia Bhatt headlines the cast of RRR as well as Gangubai Kathiawadi. She plays the titular role in the latter, and a significant role in the former. Next, Ajay Devgn is a part of both movies. He has extended cameos in both the films.
Finally, both RRR and Gangubai Kathiawadi are tentpole films for their respective makers. RRR is a long-in-the-making project for S S Rajamouli. It has an impressive cast of Ram Charan and Jr NTR, along with Alia Bhatt and Ajay Devgn. Gangubai Kathiawadi is a long-time passion project for Sanjay Leela Bhansali. A clash at the box office does not bode well for either film.
Ever since the announcement of the reopening of theatres in Maharashtra and Mumbai, the movies release calendar has got jam-packed as hell. Film after film announced their release dates in quick succession, lest they lost out on an optimal release date. The speed of film release announcements took S S Rajamouli and RRR team unawares, and they were left hanging in limbo with no suitable date remaining for them to release their highly anticipated action extravaganza. They had no option but to release the film on their previously preferred release date.
It remains to be seen if this new development compels Sanjay Leela Bhansali to push back the release date for Gangubai Kathiawadi. If at all they do clash at the box office, Gangubai Kathiawadi is sure to end up on the disgruntled side as far as box office collections go.
