S.S. Rajamouli’s period actioner ‘RRR’ has garnered an unprecedented response from audiences and critics across the globe since its theatrical release on 25th March. On the commercial front, the visually stunning movie has grossed around a whopping Rs.1200 crores at the box office. Later, ‘RRR’ started streaming on the Netflix OTT platform globally where it beautifully reinvented its viewing pattern.
Recently, the action extravaganza had achieved the rare feat of acquiring the ‘Certified Fresh’ status from the globally renowned reviews aggregation portal Rotten Tomatoes. Moreover, the film holds an impressive user rating of 8.1 on IMDb. And the incessant appreciation from the foreign film fraternity continues till date.
And now, in yet another fantastic piece of update, Jr. NTR and Ram Charan starrer ‘RRR’ has been nominated for the ‘Best Picture’ midseason award at the Hollywood Critics Association, a well-known LA-based film critic organization. The nominees are those films which were released in the first half of 2022.
Alongside ‘RRR’, other HCA nominees for the top award ‘Best Picture’ category are Tom Cruise’s billion-dollar blockbuster ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, Robert Pattinson’s ‘The Batman’, multiverse actioner ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’, Apple’s ‘Cha Cha Real Smooth’, Elvis Presley biopic ‘Elvis’, period film ‘The Northman’, action comedy ‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’, comedy film ‘Marcel The Shell with Shoes On’, and Disney and Pixar’s animated movie ‘Turning Red’.
As you can see ‘RRR’ is competing with some of the biggest and widely acclaimed movies from 2022 so far. So, what are the chances of ‘RRR’ winning the ‘Best Picture’ award at the Hollywood Critics Association 2022? Let’s find out.
If we consider the aforementioned HCA nominated films including ‘RRR’ from their respective Rotten Tomatoes critics score / audience score, the data might provide some insight about the probable ‘Best Picture’ winner amongst them, although it’s obviously not a foolproof method. We have compiled a list of the movies’ critics and audience RT scores as per their ranks.
| Best Picture Nominated Movie | Critics Score | Audience Score |
| Marcel The Shell with Shoes On | 100% | 92% |
| Top Gun: Maverick | 96% | 99% |
| Everything Everywhere All At Once | 95% | 89% |
| Turning Red | 94% | 72% |
| RRR | 91% | 94% |
| The Northman | 89% | 64% |
| The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent | 86% | 87% |
| Cha Cha Real Smooth | 86% | 59% |
| The Batman | 85% | 87% |
| Elvis | 78% | 94% |
So, as you can observe from the above scores, although ‘Marcel The Shell with Shoes On’ has scored the highest critics score, it might not be the actual winner as live action films usually take precedence over their animated counterparts. Moreover, its number of user ratings are not significant to arrive at a conclusion.
The next best average critics-audience score is held by ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ while ‘RRR’ holds the third best average score on Rotten Tomatoes. So, it seems that it all boils down to a battle between ‘RRR’ and ‘Top: Gun Maverick’ for the ‘Best Picture’ award at Hollywood Critics Association. And to be honest, it’s a tough fight because the emotional undercurrent for both these films is quite high and both movies have their own fan following. So, the chances of ‘RRR winning the trophy are good, if not great.
It remains to be seen whether the ‘Best Picture’ HCA award will be bagged by either ‘RRR or ‘Top Gun: Maverick’. Or, who knows, some other film like ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ might spring a surprise like ‘CODA’ did last year. The winners of the HCA Midseason Awards will be announced on 1st July by Hollywood Critics Association. Stay tuned until then.
