Rajamouli’s RRR is expected to get off to a flying start at the domestic and international box office. Such is the hype surrounding this periodic action drama that has Jr NTR and Ram Charan in the lead roles. Coming to the topic, the preliminary censor certificate accredited for RRR implies that Rajamouli is taking the biggest risk.
As per the censor certificate, RRR will have a runtime of over 186 minutes i.e., 3 hours 6 minutes. This is a substantially lengthy run-time for a commercial film or any feature film for that matter. Sustaining the attention of the audience and keeping them engaged for as many as 3 hours at a stretch is not an easy task by any stretch of the imagination. However, Rajamouli seems to have opted to take this big risk.
One of the main complaints Rajamouli had while rolling out Baahubali 2 was that he had to chop off certain scenes to ensure the run-time is well under 3 hours. But this time around, he appears to have taken an unapologetic stance by locking the runtime at 3 hours 6 minutes.
It is heard that there are over half a dozen heavy duty action blocks in RRR. Watching so much action at a stretch can be tiring. To avoid the same, these action blocks should be driven by pre-established drama. If the essential drama is lacking, the lengthy run-time could misfire big time. For the master craftsman that he is, Rajamouli would have locked the lengthy runtime only if he is fully confident that the film has what it takes to keep the viewers hooked all the way through. But can he deliver when it matters the most? We will know the answer on 7th January.
