In case you guys missed it, AT&T, a phone company which owned Warner Media, decided to tie up with Discovery to become one behemoth of a content producing media giant, two days ago. Warner Media has been on the decline since AT&T acquired the media giant back in 2018 and with the company’s focus now being on building a nationwide 5G and fiber-optics networks, AT&T has decided to step back from the content business and let Discovery, an established brand in the field, run the entire streaming and content producing side of things. This announcement has lit multiple social media platforms on fire overnight, with Twitter being the main source for speculations.
When AT&T was in charge of the WarnerMedia, they were constantly at odds with various artists, directors and producers and this couldn’t be truer for the now defunct “Snyderverse”. With Discover being known for its talent friendly approach, Twitter has been bringing back the Hashtags #RestoreTheSnyderVerse and #ReleaseTheAyerCut with a vengeance. Although The Ayer Cut might still be in doubt, there is a good chance we might get a look at the extended version of the Snyderverse, with new directors for the upcoming DC projects all turning to Zack Snyder to know how their films should appear in continuity with his films. We don’t know what’s going to happen, but hopefully we will finally get the DC Extended Universe that we have been waiting for.
The new media company that has formed has the world famous brands of HBO, the film franchises under the belt of Warner Bros., one of the largest comic book companies in the world – DC comics, Cartoon Network, Adult Swim, Cinemax, CNN, TBS and TNT as well as unscripted and reality content from HGTV, the Food Network, TLC, the Oprah Winfrey Network, Animal Planet, and we can’t forget the most important show coming from Discover, the Discovery Channel itself. With the new merged company being worth over a mammoth 100 billion USD, they plan to compete against Netflix and Disney+ in the International market and plan to beat them too. With content available as varied as the Warner Media-Discovery Merger (with the aforementioned content, alongside reality television, children’s channels, adult channels, sports, news, among many others), we are looking at a 2022 with another new International OTT giant on the market.
Due to all this, any number of things could happen. If Discovery wants to please the DC fans, they will probably focus their efforts on the upcoming DC projects. Or they might work on the HBO Max streaming platform and find a way to make it available for the international audience. They will probably add their own content onto the new platform or merge the two platforms for easier access. Maybe all the previously mentioned things could happen simultaneously as well as multiple other things we haven’t thought of. For now, we will have to wait and see.
