SonyLIV’s April 2026 Report: When Originals Went Missing

SonyLIV’s April 2026 Report: When Originals Went Missing

Undekhi Season 4 premiered on May 1 and opened to a rather mixed response from viewers, who have deemed this SonyLIV original less compelling than the previous seasons. And speaking of SonyLIV originals, do you know that there is a 42-day gap between the release of Undekhi Season 4 (May 1) and Jazz City (March 19)? During this time, no original title surfaced from the streaming service’s side. In other words, the streamer didn’t deliver any original series in April 2026.

For a major streaming player, a 42-day gap between originals feels like an eternity in the fast-paced world of digital entertainment.

To be fair, the lights weren’t completely off in April 2026. SonyLIV kept the library stocked with some prominent licensed titles. We saw Aamir Khan’s Sitaare Zameen Par (April 3), Toh Ti Ani Fuji (April 10), Sitaaron Ke Sitaare (April 17), and Doc Season 2 (April 30).

While some of these are great picks, there’s a specific ‘soul’ to an original production, that unique SonyLIV DNA, that licensed content just can’t replicate. Fans don’t just go to the platform for movies; they go for the next Scam 1992 or Maharani.

In the streaming wars, ‘content is king’, but ‘consistency is the kingdom’. When a platform goes quiet for over a month, it leaves subscribers wondering if their monthly fee is working as hard as it should.

One could argue that this is a case of quality over quantity. SonyLIV has often doubled down on high production values rather than churning out weekly filler. But keeping originals away for such a long duration doesn’t make much sense.

SonyLIV had an excellent opportunity to make up for this drought by delivering Undekhi Season 4. Unfortunately, the latest season failed to live up to viewers’ expectations.

While streaming platforms like Prime Video, JioHotstar and Netflix are leaving no stone unturned to provide the best and trending titles to their subscribers, taking advantage of the summertime in India along the way, SonyLIV, on the other hand, is playing a completely different game.

So far, we know that SonyLIV has announced the development of Scam 2010: The Subrata Roy Saga, a new season of Maharani, and Dynasty (starring Raveena Tandon). But that’s just about it.

In an era where viewer loyalty is as fleeting as a trending hashtag, SonyLIV cannot afford to stay silent for long. Heavyweight titles like Scam 2010 and Dynasty might look good on a coming-soon slate, but ‘coming soon’ doesn’t keep the screen glowing today.

If SonyLIV wants to reclaim its crown as the home of gritty, prestige storytelling, it needs to stop testing its subscribers’ patience and start delivering the ‘soul’ (Originals) it’s known for. After all, a kingdom without consistency is just a library of what used to be. Stay tuned for more updates.
