ZEE5’s slate in April 2026 felt like a diverse mix of experimental and comfort watches. From small-town clones in Karnataka to high-society murders in Himachal, the platform leaned heavily into genre-bending stories this month.
April 2026 kicked off with a dose of nostalgia and slapstick, thanks to Bhabhiji Ghar Par Hain: Fun on the Run. This special movie-format release of the beloved sitcom took the characters out of their usual neighbourhood. Its theatrical run turned out to be a disaster, but its reception on OTT was more positive.
The seven-episode Tamil comedy thriller, Kaakee Circus, balanced suspense with a bit of local charm, proving that ZEE5’s strength often lies in its grounded, regional narratives. Helmed by Ameen Barif, the show revolves around a chaotic investigation into a temple donation box theft at a small-town sub-jail, featuring stars Munishkanth, Rajesh Madhavan and Subash Selvam.
Assi, led by Taapsee Pannu, emerged as a heavy hitter on the platform last month. While not a popcorn watch, it generated significant conversation on social media. It performed steadily, driven by word-of-mouth recommendations from viewers who appreciate gritty, realistic storytelling.
Rajat Kapoor’s whodunit, Everybody Loves Sohrab Handa, emerged as the ‘intellectual’ favourite of the month. Set in a claustrophobic mansion in Himachal, the film follows the murder of the insufferable Sohrab Handa (Vinay Pathak). Despite its slow pacing, viewers loved watching the cast perform together.
Bringing real-life father and son Jayaram and Kalidas Jayaram together, Aashakal Aayiram, the Malayalam family drama, hit the sweet spot for the home-viewing demographic. It received a mostly positive reception from viewers.
Perhaps the most unique entry of the month is Jerax. This Kannada series introduced us to a Xerox shop owner who discovers his machine can clone people, a surprise hit. It’s quirky, witty, and doesn’t take itself too seriously. Nagabhushana’s performance was widely praised, helping the show find a dedicated fanbase among younger viewers looking for something offbeat.
As a late-April release, Band Melam is currently picking up steam. With its focus on celebration and community, it’s proving to be the perfect ‘palate cleanser’ after the month’s heavier thrillers. Stay tuned for more updates.
