Regional content on OTT has become just as important as Hindi content, and the numbers make that clear when we consider the case of ZEE5. More than half of India’s paid OTT subscriptions now come from viewers who prefer stories in their own languages. This shows a real shift in what people want to watch. South Indian, Marathi and Bengali audiences are driving this change, and platforms are starting to understand that language loyalty is stronger than ever.
When regional shows and films contribute almost half of the total watch time on ZEE5, it proves that viewers are not treating these stories as side options. They are choosing them first. Affordable language packs help, but the bigger reason is that people want stories that sound like their own world. This has pushed OTT services to build dedicated teams for each region so that the writing, locations and characters feel true to local culture.
The trend is also visible in what is being watched. Films are still the biggest draw for new users, but regional originals are gaining momentum. Dramas rooted in familiar settings are performing better than formula content. Even horror, when built around local myths, is growing fast in markets like Malayalam and Telugu. These are not niche tastes. They are mainstream choices for millions of paying subscribers.
Hindi content will always have scale, but it no longer defines the market on its own. Regional stories are standing beside it, not below it, and the future of OTT in India will be shaped by both.
