Hansal Mehta earlier considered Riz Ahmed for the movie, but later went with Rajkummar Rao. The movie is also the debut movie for actor Mukul Dev as a writer.

Though it wasn’t mentioned the movie is loosely based on the 2014 Badaun Gang Rape case and also the 2016 Una Flogging incident.

DrishyamThe movie is the official Hindi remake of the super hit Malayalam film of the same name starring Mohanlal. Drishyam directed by Nishikant Kamat stars Ajay Devgn, Tabu, and Shriya Saran in the lead, Like the original movie, this too follows the journey of a family of four who is accused of the disappearance and murder of Sam, who is a policewoman’s son. Vijay, the head of the family takes it upon himself to protect his family and leaves no stone unturned as he tries to shield his family from all that is happening to them.

11. Paan Singh Tomar: Netflix

The movie stars Irrfan Khan as Paan Singh Tomar who is part of the Indian Army and becomes an athlete and ends up winning gold medals at the Indian National Games seven times in a row. Later, due to issues in his family he comes back home only to see his family being harassed and no help from the police whatsoever. As his mother gets murdered, he ends up becoming a Baaghi in the Chambal region who is known as a Baaghi. He prepares his gang and starts kidnapping and extorting money from businessmen to keep his gang well equipped. Things get out of hand when it is revealed that this celebrated athlete now has murdered nine villagers who were working as police informants.

10. Talvar: Disney+ Hotstar

The movie is based on the 2008 double murder case in Noida of a teenage girl and her family’s servants that rocked the notion. The movie follows a tough cop who deals with three conflicting perspectives of the double murder case that shook everyone to the core. The investigation involved a CBI team and then another CBI team who questioned them all over again. The case remained one of the most complicated as the prime suspects in every scenario ended up being the parents of the teenage daughter.

9. Reservoir Dogs: Amazon Prime Video

Reservoir DogsA Quentin Tarantino classic and regarded as one of the best independent movies to be released follows the stories of six criminals with pseudonyms. All of them are strangers to each other and are hired to carry out a heist, a diamond robbery to be precise. The robbery goes awfully wrong and the gang is ambushed by the police. The group moves out and meets at the rendezvous and realize that they were set up to fail, Now they try to find the traitor amongst themselves, Interesting point of the movie is, it shows the before and after of the heist and not during, making it one unique Tarantino movie as usual.

8. Once Upon A Time In America: Amazon Prime Video

Once Upon A Time In AmericaThe movie is iconic in every sense and is termed as one of the best gangster movies of all time, The movie is a crime drama by filmmaker Sergio Leone and is also one of his last movies to release before his death. The movie stars Robert De Niro and James Woods in lead roles. It is set in 1968, the movie is told in flashbacks and the tales of two friends Max and Noodles are brought up. Max and Noodles lead a group of Jewish ghetto youths, who rise to become the Jewish gangsters and enter the world of organized crime and together become part of mobsters that were on the rise in America at the time. The movie is loosely based on the novel by Harry Grey’s Novel “The Hoods”.

The story follows South Boston cop Billy Costigan, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, who goes undercover to infiltrate the organization of gang’s chief Frank Costello, played by Jack Nicholson. As Billy now has gained the gangster’s trust, a long-time criminal named Colin Sullivan played by Matt Damon infiltrates the police department and reports the activities to the gang bosses. This is when both the organizations realize they have a mole amongst them and now Billy and Colin must figure out each other’s identities to save their lives.

5. Black Friday: Netflix

The film follows Indian gangster Tiger Memon played by Pavan Malhotra who under extreme torture confesses to his involvement in a plot to set off explosives throughout the city of Bombay. The police on the other hand choose not to believe him. However, things turn out exactly as he mentioned and within no time bombs tear apart the city that Friday, wreaking havoc and traumatizing the citizens of Bombay. Through a series of interviews, DCP Rakesh Maria played by Kay Kay Menon comes closer to discovering who the mastermind of the conspiracy is, but it soon starts getting clear that a foreign organization must be involved that helped in carrying out the event.

Se7enSe7en too is an absolute classic and definite must-watch for crime genre fans. The story follows retiring police Detective William Somerset, played by Morgan Freeman who for one last time gets on a case. With the help of newly transferred David Mills played by Brad Pitt, they discover several well-planned and grizzly murders. Soon they realize they are dealing with a serial killer who is played by Kevin Spacey. He has been targeting people who he thinks represent one of the seven deadly sins. While they solve the case, Somerset also befriends Mills’ wife, Tracy played by Gwyneth Paltrow, who is pregnant and is worried about raising her child in a city that’s filled with awful crimes.

Now it is a match of a lifetime between Batman and his forever nemesis the Joker.

Directed by Francis Ford Coppola, the movie follows the journey of Vito and Michael. The movie is interesting in the sense that it is both a sequel and a prequel. While it shows how after the events of the first movie Michael tries to expand the business, it also introduces Robert de Niro as young Vito and how he became who he is today.

Even with all these, Michael tries his hardest to stay true to his wife Kay played by Diane Keaton but besides that, he gets drawn and dragged deeper and deeper into the family business and the world of crime.
