This year’s festive season will see many anticipated movies releasing on OTT, the biggest two Tamil movies being Vijay Sethupathi starrer ‘Tughlaq Durbar’ and Santhanam‘s ‘Dikkiloona‘. Although theaters are slowly and steadily reopening, there is still a huge issue as far as collections are concerned, since some states haven’t allowed theaters to open and most states are operating at 50% capacity. In this scenario, actor Santhanam’s much delayed film ‘Dikkiloona’ has finally got a release date. It will now premiere on Zee5 on the 10th of September, which also happens to be the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi. The film also stars former Indian cricketer Harbhajan Singh, Anagha and Shirin Kanchwala in important roles.
The other major release on this day is Vijay Sethupathi‘s much awaited ‘Tughlaq Durbar‘. This film will first have a television premiere on Sun TV on 10th September, post which it will be available on streaming giant Netflix. Helmed by debutant director Delhi Prasad Deenadayal, ‘Tughlaq Durbar’ is a political satire with dialogues penned by Balaji Tharaneetharan. Produced by Lalit Kumar of Seven Screen Studio, the movie also stars Aditi Rao Hydari, Manjima Mohan, and Parthiban in pivotal roles. The film’s music by Govind Vasantha is making waves since the song ‘Kaami Kaami’ dropped this evening at 8pm.
Now, the OTT platforms are giving an equal chance for all films to do well, unlike theatres, where big-ticket movies would obviously end up getting more number of shows than smaller ones. This pretty much may have been the scene had both ‘Tughlaq Durbar’ and ‘Dikkiloona’ seen a theatrical release. With the former being a ‘Makkal Selvan’ Vijay Sethupathi (as he is fondly referred to as) release, the most predictable scenario would be it hogging more screens than the Santhanam starrer, which by all means may have chosen a separate release date in order to avoid the clash.
It is now to be seen how well the two movies do, although the first preference may still very well be the more starry one. Having said that, the release strategy of ‘Tughlaq Durbar’ is truly applause-worthy since they have really captured the market, giving the film both, a digital as well as a television premiere. The makers have indeed struck a good deal with both platforms, where there was initial talk of the film going to Disney+Hotstar. It is also being speculated that actor Nani’s ‘Tuck Jagadish’ is expected to premier on 10th September on Amazon Prime video, which might just make it a Triple Bonanza! Well, with bated breath and fingers crossed, here’s hoping for an announcement from the makers soon.
