The movie is based on an article on Fred Rogers that had appeared twenty years ago in Esquire magazine. Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys) writes for Esquire. He is pushed by his editor to write a story on Fred Rogers (Tom Hanks) or Mister Rogers, as he is known to children all over the country. Lloyd is a sceptic who believes that no one can be so nice and kind in real life as Mr Rogers is. He meets Mr Rogers with an intention to prove that his kindness is a sham, put on just for the screen. But his interactions with Rogers soon prove him wrong. Most importantly, Mr Rogers helps him to reconcile with his estranged father Jerry (Chris Cooper), and when Lloyd collapses one day, Rogers brings him to his home to help him recuperate. In the end, Lloyd lets go of his cynicism and becomes a better person on account of his interactions with Mr Rogers. The real story behind the movie is somewhat similar. The real-life Esquire writer Tom Junod, who’s as cynical as Lloyd is shown to be in the movie, ultimately submits his story on Mr Rogers, titled, “Can You Say … Hero?”
