Based on the 2005 Japanese novel The Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino, the project revolves around a single mother, Yasuko Hanaoka, who lives with her daughter alongside their neighbour, Tetsuya Ishigami. When Hanaoka’s abusive ex-husband returns to extort money from his former wife, he gets killed by accident in the scuffle. It is here that Ishigami, who is revealed to be in love with Hanaoka, offers his help in disposing off the body. After lengthy investigations and rock-solid alibis, the police are still not convinced about Hanaoke’s innocence. What ensues is a twisted tale about depression, secret romances and murders.
